How To Keep Your Skin Hydrated With The Change of Season

With the warm days of summer behind us, we are full speed into the beautiful autumn season and cooler winter months.  With the change of the season, not only is the weather changing—our skin is changing too!  Now that the air is much more crisp and not as humid, it plays a role in how our skin looks and feels.  We may not realize it, but the air and temperature impacts our skin in various ways.  Here are our 8 best tips on how to have hydrated and glowing skin during the fall and winter.

1. Soapless cleanser: Since the air is cool, some of the hydration in our skin will be lost.  We want to prevent our skin from drying out too much so we need to use a cleanser that will be sensitive to our skin.  Nothing too harsh or with chemicals that will further dry out our skin.  Try something that is more of a creamy consistency which is better for dry skin because it will have added benefits and nutrients to replenish the moisture and add a dewy look to your complexion.
2. Don’t skip the toner:  A toner is vital after using a cleanser.  A good cleanser will remove debri and impurities from your skin but you need to bring the pH of the skin back down so that the moisturizer you put on after the cleanser will actually penetrate and work on the skin.  We recommend Skintelligence as a good toner to use.

3. Exfoliate: If your skin is drying and you could also try a gentle exfoliator.  You should not use anything too harsh or abrasive.  A light exfoliator will slosh off any dry or dead skin and will leave you with fresh new skin to maintain.  You should be exfoliating 2-3 times a week to keep your skin cells on your face healthy.

4. Moisturize: Using a moisturizer is key during this time of the year!  Having a quality moisturizer is one of the prime ways to keep your skin hydrated.  When our skin is too dry it will feel tight and uncomfortable.  Using a moisturizer will prevent that and keep our skin looking young, fresh, and radiant.
5. Use a moisture binding lip balm (not chapstick): Don’t forget your lips!  We need to keep those puckers soft and smooth and hydrated as well!  Make sure you are using a lip balm because chapped lips are not only painful but they will make your lip product not look as nice if your lips are cracking.  Sometimes we spend so much time worrying about our face that we forget our lips. Chapstick tends to dry out your lips and you feel like you need to constantly put more on.  A good way to tell if a lip balm is doing it’s job is to see how long it keeps your lips moist.
6. Apply Sunblock (not sunscreen): Just because you can’t feel the rays of sun on your skin and sometimes it is a cloudy day, sunscreen is still a vital component of your skin care regimen.  This is something that should be applied 365 days a year!  Don’t take the overcast days for granted because the suns rays can still reach you.  A good sunblock with natural ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide is best to use year round.  Sunblocks stay on the skin and provide broad spectrum protection. Sunscreens are chemicals that react with sun rays and will not work after 2 hours so you have to reapply every 2 hours for full day protection!

7. Drink up: No not the soda or juice, but try to keep drinking water throughout the day.  Water has a plethora of benefits.  It keep you full, gives you energy, and of course it hydrates your skin!  We can give you an endless amount of tips and recommendation on products to apply, but we also need to focus on inner beauty and keeping ourselves healthy from the inside.

8. Lukewarm Water: We know that now that it is cold it is very tempting to come home from work or school and want to jump in the shower to get all nice and warm with a hot bath.  Unfortunately, when using hot water this is drastically absorbing the moisture out of your skin.  This doesn’t mean you need to shower in an ice bath, but try lukewarm water for a while and see the difference in your skin.
